Google Close to Finishing Android Wear App for iOS

Earlier this year, news leaked that Google was working on an Android Wear app for the iOS App Store, and it appears that the company's progress on engineering Android Wear devices to work with iPhones is nearing completion.

According to a source that spoke to The Verge, Android Wear on the iPhone works similarly to the Apple Watch, connecting through a companion app and providing functions like Notifications. Google is said to be "close to finishing" the final technical details behind the project.

In its current state of development, Android Wear works along with a companion app on the      iPhone and supports basic functions like notifications -- as you can see in the photo below. As      it does on Android, on the iPhone Android Wear also supports Google Now's ambient                    information cards, voice search, and other voice actions. It should also support some more        advanced features with Google's own iOS apps, like replying to Gmail messages.

If Google finishes the project and submits its Android Wear app to the iOS App Store, it is not clear how Apple will react, given that the app would allow Android Wear devices to compete directly with the Apple Watch. Apple allows Pebble and other competing fitness bands to have apps in the App Store, so it may also permit Google to release an Android Wear app, but at the same time, Apple has aggressively cut down on products similar to the Apple Watch in its retail stores.

It no longer sells fitness devices like the Fitbit, the Jawbone UP, and the Nike Fuelband, and over the years, Apple has also had some altercations with Google. Apple used to feature Google Maps on its iOS devices, but moved on to its own proprietary mapping solution several years ago.

Android Wear watches are built on Google's platform but are available from a number of Apple's competitors, including Samsung and LG. Popular smartwatches like the LG G, the Moto 360, and Samsung's Gear lineup are all Android Wear devices.

Bing Places Adds Several Agency-Friendly Local Business Listing Tools

Agency dashboard offers local listing management, sharing with clients, features for chain businesses and more.

Local SEO consultants and agencies that manage business listings for clients have a number of new, agency-friendly tools at their disposal in Bing Places for Business.
According to Bing’s announcement, the first step is for consultants to register as an agency at BingPlaces.com.
Once registered, agencies will have access to a new dashboard with a summary of all current listings and links to add new client locations — up to 10,000 businesses at once. The dashboard shows both the total number of business listings submitted, how many have been published and how many are in review or were suspended.
Agencies will be able to share access to individual listings with clients.
Another new option is the ability to register chain business locations. Bing says these don’t have to be verified individually, but consultants will need to provide a signed authorization from their client (the chain business).
In fact, Bing is trying to build in a level of security throughout the agency tools:
After you submit your clients’ business listing to Bing Places, your client must verify the listing, which helps us ensure that you are authorized to manage their information. During client verification, a verification PIN is sent by postcard to each of your clients. Either you or your client then must enter that PIN on Bing Places to complete verification.
We’ve reached out to Bing’s communications teams to find out if this is available only in the U.S., or also for Bing Places users in Canada and the U.K.

Flipkart to create 2 million jobs in 2015

Flipkart said 50-60% of the jobs created by the company in 2015 would be in Tier II and Tier III cities

Leading e-commerce company Flipkart on Wednesday said it would directly and indirectly create about two million in 2015 through its marketplace and ancillary services.
Among other segments, logistics and warehousing would be key employment generators, the company said.
In 2014, the e-commerce industry created about half a million jobs, according to Flipkart.
The Bengaluru-based company employs about 33,000 people. Earlier this week, Flipkart said it planned to double the size of its technology team in 2015 to 2,000.
“E-commerce has contributed a lot to generation of employment opportunities while enabling small and medium enterprises and local artisans,” said Ankit Nagori, senior vice-president for marketplace at Flipkart. “Sellers on our marketplace have been responsible for driving employment within their own communities. Support facilities like merchandising, buying, packaging and cataloging have generated more than 75,000 jobs in the last year,” he added.
Flipkart said 50-60 per cent of the jobs created by the company in 2015 would be Tier II and Tier III cities. “Jaipur and Baroda have become ancillary industry hubs (cataloging and packaging) and they will continue to generate more opportunities,” the company said.
Sellers would create around 20-25 jobs each, Flipkart said. The company has 30,000 sellers in its online marketplace.
“We offer programmes in 20 cities in association with the ministry of labour to train interested people, helping them upgrade skills and chart out careers in industries they choose to enter,” Nagori said. “We plan to scale up this to 40 cities in the next six months,” he added.

Latest Android malware sneakily installs rogue apps, but Play Store users need not worry

Quick heads-up on a vulnerability you might learn about soon. The folks at Palo Alto stumbled across a major security vulnerability within Android that could allow malicious apps to hijack an app install. Before you freak out and hook your phone up to a chemo machine to rid it of any impurities, stop — there’s almost nothing to be worried about here:
  • Google has already patched it ahead of this report being released
  • The initial bug was reported to Google as early as January 2014. We suspect Google kept it under wraps this long to make sure no-gooders wouldn’t try to target exposed devices
  • The vulnerability only affects sideloaded apps or apps downloaded from third-party app stores
  • It only affected Android versions prior to 4.4
  • For devices not on 4.4 or higher, Palo Alto worked with top manufacturers like Samsung to patch this fix in with their most recent software updates. Amazon also updated their Appstore to patch the vulnerability
So what does it do? According to them, since a side-loaded APK is installed from an unprotected source such as an SD card, an app could hijack the process of installing the app by Android’s package installer. It’d do this by replacing the legit APK with one that would most likely contain some sort of malware and other nasty stuff, and it would all happen without the user even knowing.
The dirty (but full) details can be found in the report published here, but the reality is that most folks with a phone made within the past couple of years are probably safe. Still, if you’re the oddball who still as a Nexus One on Android 2.3 and might be using a third-party app store over Google Play, you’ll be glad you know about it.

Twitter is now in the venture capital business

Twitter, the company better known for its short status updates, is learning to embrace the long term with venture capital investments.
On Monday, Twitter's name appeared on a list of investors that had collectively poured $80 million into Cyanogen, a startup founded in 2009 that is building a mobile operating system to rival Android and iOS. This marks the inaugural investment for Twitter Ventures, the VC arm of Twitter that has been kept mostly under wraps until now.
Twitter declined official comment on its VC activity. A source close to the company confirmed this was indeed the debut investment. Twitter Ventures is said to be operating with a "small amount" of the company's overall capital, according to the source, with plans to back businesses that have strategic benefits to Twitter, or that are simply interesting to its executives.
The venture capital arm may give Twitter a valuable sneak peek at promising new technology. In the past, the company has been late to multiple features that took users by storm, from pictures to video sharing, and later made acquisitions to catch up.
For Twitter, the decision to begin using a small portion of the $3.6 billion in cash and marketable securities it had on hand as of the end of last year could help deepen its ties with promising applications, with the potential to broaden its footprint at a time when

user growth remains a top concern on Wall Street.

user growth remains a top concern on Wall Street. "As a social networking platform, Twitter is agnostic and wants to reach different audiences," says Vivian Lee, VP of marketing and communications for Cyanogen. The company, which now has 50 million users, could prove to be a valuable platform Twitter as the former pushes to "integrate" more services, ranging from maps to music to social networks.
"This investment could help propel them into the OS market and they actually may get traction due to their very unique and engaged user base," says Brian Blau, an analyst with Gartner, who covers social media companies.
Other large technology companies like Google and IBM have launched venture funds over the years. In Google's case, the investments can sometimes be precursors to acquisitions, as happened with Nest, the smart thermostat business it invested in and then acquired last year. (Obvious Ventures, a fund launched late last year by a Twitter cofounder, backs "world-positive" businesses.)

Google Appoints Morgan Stanley's Ruth Porat as CFO

Google Inc hired Morgan Stanley Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat as its own finance chief, a sign Google is aiming to rein in costs as it invests in new businesses such as self-driving cars and internet-connected eyeglasses.
Porat has helped execute a sweeping cost-cutting strategy across several business lines at Morgan Stanley. The bank cut its expenses, excluding compensation, to 29 percent of its revenue last year, down from 34 percent in 2012.
Google's costs have jumped as the company embarked on an increasing number of ambitious projects. Last year, the company's revenue grew 19 percent, while total expenses rose 23.4 percent, a trend that alarmed some analysts.
"You want someone to come in there and push back against the free spenders," said Colin Gillis, an equity research analyst at BGC Partners, a brokerage, adding that investors hope Porat will be that person.
Google's shares rose as much as 2.5 percent on Tuesday after Porat's appointment was announced by both companies. She will start her new job on May 26.
Porat is the latest among a string of Wall Street executives to leave an industry that is increasingly regulated to move into the more free-wheeling technology sector, where fortunes can be built fast but businesses can also become irrelevant overnight.
Total compensation to Google's departing CFO was twice as much as Porat's for the three years through 2013 - $62.2 million vs $29.6 million, according to public filings by the companies. Google has not disclosed how much it expects to pay Porat.
She joined Morgan Stanley in 1987, and led Morgan Stanley's investment banking business for tech companies during the Internet boom, working with Amazon.com Inc and eBay Inc , among others.

Some analysts took her appointment as a sign Google acquisitions could pick up.
Porat ran the investment banking business for financial companies including banks, and during the financial crisis she became Morgan Stanley's point person with regulators and other government officials in Washington.
Porat, 57, was considered a potential candidate to become chief executive whenever current CEO James Gorman steps down.

The Evolution Of Google SERPs: Three Key Takeaways From SMX West 2015

We all know search engine results pages look different these days. Contributor Adam Dorfman shares information from experts that quantifies the difference and explains how marketers can cope.

Last week’s SMX West event provided some great insights into the future of search, which continues to be one of the most rewarding — and complex — areas of digital marketing.
While I only was able to attend half the sessions I earmarked, one theme that clearly stood out is just how quickly and frequently Google changes its search engine results pages (SERPs). Here are three specific examples of how SERPs continue to evolve:

1. SERPs Continue To Change

Dr. Pete Meyers’ presentation very clearly articulated how search engine results pages continue to move away from traditional links in favor of additional content like map packs, product listings, direct answers, knowledge graph boxes, and so on. (See his full presentation embedded below.)
If your sole goal in search marketing is getting high organic rankings, you are missing the boat. Whether it be due to product ads or image search results — or whatever else — those traditional organic blue links sometimes don’t even make it above the fold these days.
As a search marketer, it is important to focus on a broader range of content and data sources that populate search results pages, not just your website.

2. Direct Answers In SERPs

Dr. Pete also pointed out how paid advertising in Google search results is extraordinarily nebulous right now. When people search for lyrics on Google, links to Google Play appear, essentially making this knowledge graph result an ad (albeit a house ad) without labeling it as such.
Similar to Eric Enge’s recommendations during his presentation in the Direct Answers session, it is important to ensure that your business model isn’t reliant upon information that is easily parsed and served directly to searchers on Google, supplanting the need for them to visit your own website.

3. More Info In SERPs

Finally, Google’s iterative approach to SERPs has allowed people to ingest more information in less time than it took ten years ago.
Gord Hotchkiss presented results of an eye-tracking study that found that searchers spent just over 1.17 seconds viewing each listing in 2014, while in 2005 they spent just under 2 seconds. That increased speed allowed people to view more listings before making a click in 2014 versus 2005. (Full presentation embedded below.)
According to Hotchkiss, the creep of all of this additional information hasn’t necessarily made it more difficult for us to figure out what to click on, because it’s presented well.
Google’s SERPs are going to continue to change; often times, these changes are done so iteratively that they go unnoticed. Keeping an eye on some of these incremental changes today will help keep you ahead of the pack tomorrow and beyond.

Translating Your Articles for Link-Building

Editorial websites seldom cite or link to articles from competitors in the same industry, but foreign competitors don’t seem to have that problem. Some smart travel, tech, and fashion sites have already discovered that their foreign peers love to reuse their content, especially when they make it easy by translating their articles for those sites. Are you already sharing your content with the world?

Competitors Are the Most Relevant Sites

The best link partners are relevant to a broad scope of keywords that you want to rank for. In many cases your direct competitors rank for those keywords, but they will seldom link to you. Even when you have a great industry scoop, they will try to find another (less conflicting) source to cite.
Being perceived as a competitor and having a lot of overlap in each other’s services is bad for link-building. It is much easier to get someone’s links when you look innocent and non-threatening. A small foreign blog or big foreign authority doesn’t target the same audience and business model, so they fit that profile. But why would any site link to something that their readers probably don’t even understand?

Example From a Tech Site

News sites about smartphones need daily updates to captivate their audience. This is very labor-intensive and during some periods there is very little to report on. Updates from other countries are a welcome addition, especially when they come free.
To use this to your advantage, you can do the following: Summarize your German article about cell phone usage in Germany into an English article. Include the URL of your own German article as the original "source." By publishing this article, sites can make their visitors think they roam the entire Internet to provide them with the best information.
Because editors may be lazy, you need to rewrite your article each time it is published. To my personal surprise, more than 60 percent of the sites we contacted were interested and we had to write a lot of versions of our first article. We could easily reuse the same contacts for many articles and after expanding to other languages, this became the main link-building strategy for a German cell phone site. Apparently, any phone topic could be used for link-building, just by adding some German trend information. Where the German public (normal readers) didn’t seem that interested in those trends, foreign partners gladly cited our articles.

Google Extends Safe Browsing Protections to Google Analytics Users

If you’re a site owner there’s a good chance you have used Google Webmaster Tools, and you may have even encountered Safe Browsing notifications before.
Safe Browsing is a feature built into Webmaster Tools that alerts you if Google detects something on your site that could cause problems for other users, like if your site has been hacked and began infecting visitors with malware, for example.
Today Google announced it has extended these safe browsing protections to Google Analytics users.  So users who only have Analytics set up for their site, and not Webmaster Tools, won’t miss out on any notifications about harmful content on their site. The alerts will be delivered using the already establishing Google Analytics Notifications.
Here’s an example of what one of the notifications looks like:

This marks another of one of Google’s recent efforts to protect Internet users. Just last week the company announced it would start issuing warnings before people visit sites that prompt unwanted downloads. A couple of weeks before that Google revised its documentation on hacked sites with more detailed information how to deal with those kids of issues.

Google clearly is dedicated to making the web a safer place, and I expect we’ll see further enhancements like this one in the near future. If you have received a Safe Browsing notification from Google, or suspect for some other reason there’s problematic content on your site, I suggest reading about Google’s best practices for dealing with website hacks.
