Facebook Ad CTR Up 17%, CPC Down 17% In Q1 [Nanigans Report]

Facebook advertisers reached more customers per ad and paid less for each click in the first quarter of 2015, according to advertising automation software provider Nanigans’ Global Facebook Advertising Benchmark Report released today.
Nanigans’ customers had a 0.81% click-through rate in the first quarter, up 17% over Q4 of 2014 and 260% over this time last year. In the ecommerce vertical, CTR increased 12% QoQ and 281% YoY.

On a cost-per click basis, ads were 17% cheaper than they were in the fourth quarter — the 53 cent CPC average falling to pre-holiday levels because of, according to Nanigans, reduced demand after the Q4 shopping season. The CPC drop was especially pronounced for ecommerce advertisers, who experienced a 32% decrease in the quarter and a 14% reduction YoY. Gaming advertisers saw a 11% quarterly CPC increase and 69% for the year. Overall, CPC averages increased 4% YoY.
Overall global CPMs (cost per 1,000 impressions) dropped 3% in the quarter to $4.26, but soared 273% since the first quarter of 2014 when they were $1.14. Ecommerce CPMs — $3.74 — fell 24% in the quarter and gained 227% YoY.
Nanigans, a Facebook Marketing Partner, said most advertisers using its software have direct response goals and dedicate the overwhelming majority of budgets to Unpublished Page Post Ads, Mobile App Install Ads and Domain Ads, categories that represented 97% of spending through Nanigans in Q1.
The company notes that many of its customers use ROI-based bidding algorithms targeting high-value and high-ROI audiences that typically cost more to reach. “As such, the data in this report should not be used as a proxy for the overall Facebook marketplace,” the report stated.
The company also noted that advertisers using its software are adopting new Facebook ad products, spending 2.8 times more on video ads and 5.2 times more on multi-product ads this quarter than they did in the final quarter of 2014.

Is Google bringing Android and Chrome OS together?

Is Google bringing Android and Chrome OS together? In a word – yes, but maybe not in the way you think.
The speculation about Google merging Chrome OS and Android has been a constant over the last few years. Why does Google have two separate systems when everyone else is merging? Why doesn’t Chrome just get folded into Android? Google has to kill one of them off. It’s odd that the tech world insists on Highlander rules – there can be only one. But the truth is that Google can bring them closer and closer together, and create a seamless experience for us, and it doesn’t need one to assimilate the other in order to do that.

Chrome OS is here to stay

People have strong opinions about Chrome OS, though a lot of them have never actually tried working on a Chrome book. Ever since it was first announced, back in 2009, commentators started queuing up to proclaim it dead on arrival. There have been plenty of assertions about its failure since then. They all suppose that Chrome OS is designed to replace Windows, but it doesn’t have to beat Windows across the market.
According to NPD data, via Betanews, Chromebooks accounted for 14 percent of laptop sales in the U.S. last year, up from 8 percent in 2013, and that figure is still rising. When you consider how cheap Chromebooks are compared to the competition, and how well-suited they are to education, it’s inevitable that Chrome will continue to grow. It only looks like a failure because people use the dominant OS as a yardstick. You can argue about its relative merits (low prices, speed, no updates) and weaknesses (offline, heavy lifting, photo editing), but it is a very good fit for a specific audience and it is still improving.
Regardless of whether it has met expectations, Google is committed to it, as evidenced by the recent Chromebit unveiling alongside four budget-friendly Chromebooks, and not long after the new Chromebook Pixel.
If Chrome OS isn’t going anywhere, then is it on a collision-course with Android? Shortly after the Chrome OS announcement, back in 2009, Sergey Brin said, “Android and Chrome will likely converge over time,” but what did he mean by that?

Avoid Google Chrome’s security flaw with these password manager apps

Online security has been a huge topic of discussion — that much is evident from the sheer breadth of passcodes you likely have within your arsenal. However, although passwords serve as a convenient and (often) effective means of preventing your identity and data from being stolen, remembering them all can prove difficult without having to refer to a multitude of Post-It notes haphazardly place around your computer’s monitor.
The right password manager should do more than just lock your passcodes within an encrypted vault in order to minimize your vulnerability against attacks. Many modern password managers now allow you to sync your Web-based passwords across devices and change them with a mere click, while giving you the option to automatically sign in to your favorite sites and granting you improved security in all facets of your data.
Below are a few of our current favorites, though we still highly recommend you lock your computer whenever you step away from it. Trust us, your co-workers can be cruel if left unattended. Damn you, Brad!

Google Still Dominant, But Baidu Benefitting From Google Ban In China Says eMarketer

As China's search revenue share continues to grow, Google will largely be missing out while its sites are blocked on the mainland.

Google continues to dominate the global search market with 54.7 percent of search ad revenues worldwide in 2014. But mainland China’s ban on Google is giving Baidu, the search leader in that country, a huge advantage. Baidu will see its global share of search ad revenues increase from 6.4 percent in 2013 to 8.8 percent in 2015, according to new data from eMarketer.
“Baidu is reaping the benefits of Google’s ban in China—and of course, a massive and growing internet user population,” says eMarketer in the report, which breaks out search ad revenues from the overall digital advertising market for the first time.
The research firm notes that China will account for $14.90 billion, or 32.8 percent, of the global search spend in 2015. The U.S., by comparison, will account for $25.66 billion in ad spend this year. But, with rapid growth search growth of 32.8 percent this year — nearly double the overall growth of 16.2 percent — it’s easy to see that China could soon eclipse U.S. search spend. Spend that Google is missing out on.
For another perspective on future growth, the U.S. has internet penetration of over 86 percent of the population, while in China, just 46 percent has internet access according to Internet Live Stats.
Google’s search ad share is expected to shrink marginally from 55.2 percent in 2013 to 54.5 percent in 2015. Google’s search ad revenues will continue to far outweigh its competitors this year. The company is expected to bring in $38.42 billion in search revenues in 2014 and $4446 billion in 2015. Baidu’s revenue is expected to grow from $5.35 in 2014 to $7.18 in 2015.
Microsoft and Yahoo will see their combined search share grow by just 6.5 percent in 2015. Bing saw strong growth in 2014, with its search ad share rising from 3.7 percent in 2013 to 4.2 percent in 2014. Bing’s share is expected to hold steady in 2015. Yahoo is expected to see stronger revenue growth in 2015, rising to $1.90 billion from $1.78 billion in 2014. However, Yahoo’s global share will continue to shrink from 2.5 percent in 2014 to 2.3 percent in 2015. Last week, the two companies have extended talks to renegotiate their search deal which hit its five year mark in March.

10 Practical Tips For Using Geo-Location To Reach Your Target Audience

Geography plays an important part in creating customized and targeted marketing campaigns, and columnist Wesley Young lays out ways in which local search marketers can use geolocation to their advantage.

Jeans company True Religion needed to promote events and new products at its retail stores. Using geo-targeted emails focused on areas in which the brand had a high concentration of stores, True Religion was able to serve up dynamic emails unique to each audience to drive in-store traffic.
65,000 geo-targeted emails were opened with a 2.5% click through rate and a 1% in-store conversion, a huge impact for one campaign with a small data set, per True Religion’s Director of Global e-Commerce, Gary Penn.

Examples like the above support metrics that find geotargeting doubles the performance of all kinds of marketing methods, from email campaigns to paid search. Per data from the Local Search Association’s LSA Insights database, it also doesn’t matter what vertical your business is in.  The click-through rate for geotargeted mobile display ads was higher than the industry benchmark for all verticals.

The effectiveness of geo-targeting is only going to further improve as mobile use grows and location data becomes more accurate and available. The Local Search Association (LSA) just released data that found that, for the first time, mobile devices surpassed PC use in search for local businesses and services. As I reported last month, the majority of searches (52%) for local information on mobile devices occur either in the car or away from home or work.
Furthermore, 70% of consumers are willing to share their location information if they believe they are getting something of value in return like coupons or loyalty points, according to LSA’s Local Mobile Search Study.  This dynamically moving consumer base is only going to be more receptive to search results and ads that are specific to their location.
Geotargeting is the practice of delivering content to a consumer — via mobile or web — using geographic location information about that individual. At a basic level, a business can restrict its reach to consumers only located in a defined geographic area such as a state or a city. But location often provides much deeper, more meaningful and identifiable traits that tell you what a person wants, needs or is interested in.
Here are 10 practical tips for using geo-location information to reach your target audience.

1. Find A Venue Where Your Target Audience Will Have Specific Wants Or Needs

Stadiums, airports, universities, and malls are examples of specific venues that can be targeted in order to reach specific interest groups. Stadiums provide a great opportunity to focus on specific short engagement events with an audience defined by that event. They often host fans from two specific cities or schools or fans of a specific music genre that is heavy in one demographic. A band like One Direction, for example, is likely to attract school-age female fans.

Facebook Launches New Video Embeds & Comment Syncing From Site To Page

Facebook video now can be embedded independent of Facebook posts; conversation threads in the Facebook comment plugin will have the option to be mirrored on Facebook Pages.

Have you found the perfect Facebook video to illustrate a blog post? Now you can embed it directly on your site without its supporting post. Facebook also has a beta test that allows comments on publishers’ sites to sync to their Facebook Page and vice versa.
Facebook announced the new features today at its F8 developers conference in San Francisco.
Previously, if you wanted to embed video on your site, you had to embed the entire Facebook post containing the video. So like Twitter before it, Facebook is enabling YouTube-like video embedding. That will please publishers, journalists and the creators of videos who should see greater distribution of their content. It should also increase the number of Facebook video views, which are already averaging 3 billion a day according to the social network.
The update to the comment plugin will affect fewer publishers — at least immediately — but it could prove to be a major development. At launch in 2011 and until now, the comment plugin gave publishers the ability to host a Facebook powered discussion board on their site, but the conversation there is largely siloed. Commenters are given the ability to post comments on their News Feed, but any conversation on a site’s Facebook Page is separate from the discussion going on within the comment plugin.
Now publishers will have the option to mirror those conversations. The discussion thread from any link posted on a site’s Facebook Page will automatically pull in comments from the plugin and vice versa.
“The value here is we can unify the conversation in multiple places,” said Simon Cross, a product manager on Facebook’s platform team. “We think that’s going to increase engagement on your website because there will be more comments there.”
The new feature is being rolled out in the next few weeks as a beta test with six publishers: BET, NHL, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, Elite Daily and Fox Sports.

Google testing new on-body detection feature for Android phones

New Delhi: Google is reportedly introducing a new feature for Android phones that can detect human touch and automatically adjust the lock mode. Using the accelerometer of the phone, the feature can figure out when you are holding the phone or have it in your pocket, and lock it when it is away.
If you unlock the device once, it will stay unlocked till you are holding it or keep it in your pocket. Once you keep the phone away, it will lock again; while picking it up again will require you to manually put in the passcode.
AndroidPolice stated in its report that the purpose behind the feature is to add just a little convenience and security, and avoid the data being easily stolen by potential thieves if you leave your phone sitting on a table or forget it somewhere.
However, there is a catch here. If you hand your phone to someone else while it is unlocked, it will not lock again as the feature isn't equipped to recognize owner's hands or which pocket it sits in.
The feature was spotted on Nexus 4 running Android 5.0.1 OS. Although it is not a feature related to the latest Android 5.1, but would require a 5.0 OS or above that to work.
