Best new Apple TV games

Best new Apple TV games

We Can Barely Wait For The New Apple TV. Apple Will Finally Allow Apps And Games, Turning The Apple TV Into The Greatest Games Console. But What Games Will We Be Able To Play? Here’s Our Guide To The Best Apple TV Games We’re Looking Forward To Trying At Launch – And A List Of 9 More We Hope To See On Apple TV In The Future

The New Apple TV Is More Than Just A ‘Hobby’, It’s Now A Fully-Fledged Television System Complete With Apps, And Even More Importantly, Games. When The New Apple TV Launches You’ll Be Able To Play Games Using The Siri Remote Or An MFi (Made For IOS) Controller.

Best new Apple TV games
Best new Apple TV games

All This Is Set To Turn The Apple TV Into One Of The Best Video Games Consoles On The Market. While It’s Tempting To Think Of The Apple TV As A Games Machine For Casual And Non-Traditional Gamers – The Sort Of Device That Nintendo Specialises In – The Quality Of Gaming On The IPad And IPhone Has Risen Tremendously In Recent Years. And With The New A9X Processor And Metal Software You Shouldn’t Underestimate The Power Of The New Apple TV.

Although Apple Is Famously Quiet About Upcoming Products, We Know That Games Are Going To Be Made For The Apple TV. Here Are The Best Games That We Know Are Coming To The New Apple TV, And The Reasons Why We’re Looking Forward To Playing Them So Much.

Galaxy On Fire: Manticore Rising: Best Game For Apple TV

This Feels To Us Like The Key Launch For The Apple TV. Galaxy On Fire Has Long Been One Of The Most Visually Impressive Games For IPhone And IPad. Manticore Rising Will Look Fantastic On The Apple TV.

This Game Is A Prequel To Galaxy On Fire 3: Manticore, Which Will Be Released Later In The Year. Visually It Looks Spectacular, And Should Push The A9X And Metal To Its Limits.

Rayman Adventures: Best Apple TV Platform Game

Rayman Adventures Is One Of The Best Platform Games Ever Created, And It’s Great To See It On The Apple TV. While It’s Nothing New For Platformer Fans, It Does Show That The Apple TV Has First-Rate Games. (And Visually Spectacular Ones At That.)

Asphalt 8: Best Apple TV Racing Game

Few People Are Aware That The Siri Remote Has Accelerometer And Gyroscopic Functionality. While This Isn’t Quite The Same As The Nintendo Wii Remote, It Will Be Great For Playing Racing Games (Already A Style Suited To IOS Devices).

Asphalt 8 Is One Of The Best Racing Games On IOS, And We’re Looking Forward To It Hitting The Apple TV. Turn The Siri Remote On Its Side And Rotate It Left To Right To Simulate A Steering Wheel.

Afterpulse: A Great Apple TV Shooter

This Highly Rated First-Person Shooter Is A Popular IPhone And IPad Game Coming To Apple TV. We Think It’ll Be A Great Choice For Testing Out How Well An MFi Controller And An Apple TV Stack Up Against A More Traditional Console. The Graphics Are Extremely Good, And It’s Built With 64-Bit And Metal In Mind.

Crossy Road: A Great Apple TV Party Game

Crossy Road Took Centre Stage At Apple’s September Event (Where The New Apple TV Was Revealed). We Like This Quirky Action Game For IOS And Think It’ll Work Well With The Siri Remote. The Multiplayer Functionality Looked Interesting Too, And We Think It’ll Be Great Fun To Play.

Disney Infinity: Best Apple TV Game For Kids

Disney Infinity Is An Open Sandbox Game Containing A Huge List Of Marvel, Disney And Pixar Characters. It Also Includes Star Wars, And The Upcoming Version For Apple TV Could Be Where It Comes Into Its Element.

The Idea Is To Bring Kid’s Toy Figures To Life In Matching Video Games. So You Purchase A Disney Infinity Base, And Then Pop A Toy On The Device, And That Character Is Unlocked In A Video Game.

Shadowmatic: Best Apple TV Puzzler

Shadowmatic Is A Quirky Puzzler Where You Rotate Objects To Create Shadows On A Wall. You Have To Match The Shadow To The Pattern You Are Given To Progress.

It’s A Nice Use Of Touch To Create The Kind Of Game That Doesn’t Work With A Traditional Control Pad. While It May Be A Little Sedate For Some, We Think It’ll Be A Great Way To Wind Down.

Beat Sports: Like Wii Sports For Apple TV

Thanks To The Accelerometer In The Siri Remote, You Can Use It In A Similar Fashion To The Wii U Controller. One Of The Best Games To Make Use Of This Is Beat Sports, A Game That Mixes Cartoon Sports With Music.

While It’s A Clear Attempt To Capture The Market That Wii Sports Created, That’s Not Exactly A Bad Thing: This Could Be The Game That The Family Gets Round The TV To Play.

Guitar Hero: A Perennial Classic Now Coming To Apple TV

What More Can Be Said? Guitar Hero Is A Perennial Classic Where You Play Guitar Using The Matching Controller. Pretending To Be A Rock Star Is Great Fun, And We’re Glad To See Guitar Hero Hit The Apple TV (Even If It Is A Bit Long In The Tooth Now).

Transistor: Best Apple TV Role-Playing Game

This Is A Sci-Fi-Themed Action RPG From Supergiant Games (The People Who Made Bastion). You Control A Red-Haired Female With A Giant Sword Battling Through A Futuristic City.

Transistor Is A Very Highly Rated Game On PC Consoles. While It’s A Hack-And-Slash Arcade Game, There Is A Story To It, And You Do Spend A Lot Of Time Leveling Up And Getting New Equipment And Upgrades. It Looks Set To Be A Very Addictive Game.

Nine IOS Games We Really Want To See On The Apple TV

There Are Rumours Circling Around The Internet That Apple Is Due To Announce Arefreshed Apple TV At Its WWDC 2015 Event In June. Whether This Is True Is Anyone’s Guess – Its Been Over 800 Days Since The Last Apple TV Refresh And Has Been Coined As A “Hobby” By Apple In The Past. There Are Also Rumours Of The Introduction Of A App Store For Games On The Apple TV, Which Could Utilise The Huge Collection Of Games Already Available On The IPhone And IPad App Store.

If There Was An App Store Exclusively For Games On The Apple TV, How Would They Be Controlled? One Idea Is To Use MFI (Made For IPhone/IPad/IPod) Controllers, As They Can Already Interact With Many IOS Games Thanks To The Game Controller Framework That Was Introduced With IOS 7. The Game Controller Framework Allows Any Third Party Controller, As Long As Its Part Of The MFI Licensing Program, To Be Used With Compatible IPhone Or IPad Games.

The Real Question Is, If There Is A New App Store For The Apple TV On The Way, Which Games Would We Like To See Transferred To The Big Screen?

Nine IOS Games We Want To See On Apple TV: GTA San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Is, In Our Opinion, One Of The Best Grand Theft Auto Games Available And Is Perfect For The Apple TV. Why? Because It Came From A Games Console Originally, Not A Phone Or Tablet. Five Minutes Of Playing And You’ll See That GTA: San Andreas Is Exactly The Same As The Console Version Released Back In 2004, With The Exception Of High Resolution Graphics Built Specifically For Mobile Devices.

Even With A High Resolution, The Authentic GTA ‘Look’ Is Still Apparent As The Graphics Are Still Blocky And The Driving Controls Are Slightly Questionable – Just Like It Was When It Was First Released. But It Doesn’t Matter About The Graphics Or Controls, It’s About The Level Of Enjoyment And The Feeling Of Nostalgia That You’ll Get From Playing It.

If You Didn’t Get Round To Playing GTA: San Andreas When It Was First Released, You Take On The Role Of CJ, A Thug From Grove Street, Los Santos. It’s Open World And You Can Drive/Shoot/Eat/Cycle Your Way Around The Streets Of Los Santos, With Many Challenges Ahead Of You. You Can Take On Rival Gangs, Get Fit At The Gym (Or Fat In The Fast Food Restaurant) And Generally Cause GTA Style Havoc.

If Anything, It’s A Look At How Far We’ve Come In The Past 11 Years – 11 Years Ago, You Needed A Dedicated Console To Play GTA: San Andreas. Fast Forward To Today And It Can Be Run On An IPad Or Even An IPhone. Who’d Have Thought That We’d Be Able To Do That 11 Years Ago?

Nine IOS Games We Want To See On Apple TV: Does Not Commute

Another Game That Would Look Great On The Big Screen Is A Relatively New And Fairly Innovative Game Called Does Not Commute. Does Not Commute Starts You Off With A Simple Driving Challenge: Get A Car From Point A To Point B Before The Time Runs Out. (The Car Runs Automatically: You Just Tap The Left Or Right Side Of The Screen To Steer.) But As Soon As You Achieve This, The Game Rewinds Time And Asks You To Repeat The Trick With A Second Vehicle On The Same Course.

Only This Time You Need To Contend With Another Driver On The Road: Yourself, Screaming Recklessly Across The Map In The First Car. This Repeats Until The Screen Is Chocka With High-Speed Illustrations Of Your Own Inability To Drive.

There Are So Many Neat Touches: The Dangerous Ramps, Jumps And Shortcuts That You’re Encouraged To Use In Order To Avoid Traffic, But Which Nearly Always End In Disaster; The Desperate Rush To Beat The Clock And Pick Up The Extra-Time Powerups; And, Best Of All, The Challenge Of Adapting To A Vehicle That Handles Completely Differently Within A Space Of Seconds.

So Why Would It Be Great On The Apple TV? Not Only Do We Think That Does Not Commute Has Great Graphics That Contribute Towards An All Round Fun Game, The Style Is One That’s Unique And Can Be Appreciated With A Larger Screen. Also, It May Make The Game More Exciting To Play As You’d Have A Better View Of The Roads, Ramps And Shortcuts.

The Best Part? Does Not Commute Is Free To Download From The App Store, With An Optional £1.49 In-App Purchase To Unlock Checkpoints. You Can’t Say Fairer Than That Really, Can You?

Nine IOS Games We Want To See On Apple TV: Vainglory

Vainglory Is Staggeringly Well Presented, With Some Of The Best Visuals Seen On The App Store: Colourful And Lushly Detailed Environments And Well-Animated Fantasy Characters. But This Isn’t A Case Of Form Over Function

The Game Spotlights Three-On-Three Team-Based Action With (And Against) Fellow Online Players, And Each Squad Must Destroy The Crystal At Their Opponents’ Base. It’s Not Just A Matter Of Overpowering Your Foes In Head-To-Head Battle – Instead, You Must Work Together To Take Down Enemy Turrets, Use Minion Creatures As Living Shields And Generally Make Smart Decisions In Every Phase Of The Game.

The Free-To-Play Design Thankfully Puts No Limits On Gameplay: You Can Play As Much As You Want, But Only With The Certain Free Characters Offered At Any Given Time. If You Want To Use A Non-Free Warrior, You’ll Have To Pay A One-Time Fee With In-Game Currency.

Vainglory Has The Heart Of A Full-Bodied Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) Experience. And Like The Top PC Genre Entries, It’s A Remarkably Fair And Fun Free Game That Doesn’t Penalise Players Who Opt Not To Shell Out. The Overall Quality Of The Game, From The Game Mechanics To The Animation And Graphics, Is Fantastic And Would Make A Great Addition To An Apple TV App Store.

Nine Games We Want To See On Apple TV: Minecraft (Pocket Edition)

Minecraft, If It Gets Its Hooks Into You, Will Consume Your Free Time To The Point Where Your Job Is The Casual Game, Squeezed In Between Marathon Minecraft Slogs.

Those In The Know Call Minecraft A “Sandbox” Game, Part Of An Emerging Class Of Entertainments That Offer Users A Set Of Tools And Few Rules. After That, It’s Up To You How You Play. You Can Build In This World By Collecting Materials And Assembling Blocks, But Whether You Want To Use Your Building Skills To Simply Create, Or To Defend Yourself From Zombies, Is Up To You. There Are Randomly Generated Surprises In Store For Players Too!

There Are Some Slight Changes With The IOS Version, Namely The Lack Of Online Functionality. You Can Travel To Another Friends World, But Only If You’re Connected To The Same Wi-Fi Network. This Means That You’ll Have To Wait Until You Play On The PC Or Consoles (Its Available On Almost Every Major Platform) Before You Can Visit Other Worlds And See What Your Friends Have Been Creating.

Why Should It Be Ported To The Apple TV? If The Developers Include ICloud Syncing, It’d Allow IOS Gamers To Be Able To Play Minecraft On The Big Screen At Home, While Still Having The Ability To Go Out And Be Able To Carry On Creating Your Virtual World On Your IPhone/IPad. That’s Not Something That’s Possible On Any Other Platform (Unless You Share Play From A PS4 To The PS Vita, But It’s Not A Great Experience) And Would Make The IOS Minecraft Experience A Unique One.

Minecraft’s Blocky Appearance May Appear Primitive Compared To The Current Generation Of PS4/Xbox One First-Person Shooters, But The Gameplay Is Gloriously Cutting Edge. You Could Happily Play It Forever. And Might.

Nine IOS Games We Want To See On Apple TV: Oceanhorn

Oceanhorn Is A Game Reminiscent Of Traditional Zelda Games, That Many Hail To Be One Of The Best Games Available On IOS. You Start The Game By Waking Up One Morning To Discover Your Father Missing, With Only A Necklace And A Notebook Left. You Explore A Cluster Of Islands Within The Uncharted Seas, Solving Puzzles And Fighting Creatures To Try And Find More Clues As To Your Fathers Whereabouts. Even Though It May Look Fairly Simple, There Are Challenging Parts That Could Even Stump Experienced IOS Gamers – We’ve Had One Or Two Of These Experiences Ourselves!

Many Games Focus On One Main Element – Graphics, Gameplay Or Soundtrack. Once One Is Chosen, The Other Two Usually Suffer, But That’s Not The Case With Oceanhorn. Oceanhorn Is A Combination Of Fun Gameplay, Amazing Graphics And A Great Soundtrack. It Runs At 60fps On The IPhone 6, 6 Plus And IPad Air 2 And The Soundtrack Was Created By Renowned Video Game Composers Nobuo Uematsu (Composed Final Fantasy Soundtrack) And Kenji Ito. With This Level Of Detail, It’s Clear Why Oceanhorn Would Be Great On The Apple TV – Because It Would Provide A Great Experience, Both Visually An Aurally.

The Best Part Is That It Already Has Support For MFI Controllers And ICloud Progress Syncing, So A Crossover To The Apple TV Shouldn’t Be As Much Work As It Could Be For Other Developers. We Feel That Oceanhorn Is One Of A Small Number Of Apps That Could Work Well On Both Small Screens And Large Screens Alike, And Hope That We’re Proven Right One Day Soon.

Nine IOS Games We Want To See On Apple TV: 9mm

This Hugely Entertaining Third-Person Shooter, Starring Detective John Kannon, Is Very Much A Case Of ‘Shoot First, Ask Questions Once The Bad Guys Are Dead’.

9mm’s Graphics Are Superb, The Dialogue Is Hilarious And The Optional Gyroscope-Based Controls, While Initially Tricky, Make Those First Few Kills All The More Satisfying. The Buttons Are Conveniently Placed, With Crouch/Stand And The Virtual Joystick On The Left, And Shoot And Run Bottom Right, Next To A Cool Button That Allows You To Dive In Slow Motion, Which Can Come In Handy When There Are Six Or Seven Thugs Trying To Shoot You At Once.

There Are Numerous Firearms To Choose From, And A Shop For Upgrades. The Shop In The Main Game Isn’t Really Needed Though, As You Can Pick Up Both Guns And Cash From The Guys That You Shoot. The Money Should Be Saved For The Online Gameplay, Where You’ll Want To Buy Some Better Weaponry Right Away To Keep Up With The Competition. The Multiplayer Experience Includes The Standard Features Including Upgrades, A Levelling System And A Kill To Death Ratio.

9mm Looks Like It Would Translate To TV Pretty Well, With Great Graphics And Audio And Generally Fun Gameplay. Plus Everybody Loves A Good ‘Shoot-Em-Up’, Right? 9mm Is A Funny, Great-Looking Game That’s Kept Fresh By The Gyro Controls And We Hope To See It On The Big Screen One Day!

Nine IOS Games We Want To Run On The Apple TV: Tiny Wings

For Those Who Haven’t Played It Before, Tiny Wings Is A Side-Scrolling Game Based On A Single Control. Touch The Screen And Your Cute Little Bird Furls Her Stunted Wings And Speeds Downwards At A Rapid Lick. Raise Your Finger, And She Flaps Them And Soars Briefly, If You’ve Gained Sufficient Momentum. Racing Against The Sun (When It Sets Your Bird Goes To Sleep And The Game Is Over) You Have To Press And Release At The Right Moments To Navigate A Series Of Hilly, Undulating Islands As Quickly As Possible, Achieving ‘Flight’ As Much As You Can.

The Basic Gameplay Mechanics Are Simple But Exquisitely Crafted, And The Game Is An Aesthetic Delight, From The Crayony Backdrops To The Charming Music And Effects. But It Was A Recent Update That Catapulted An Already Fine Game To The Top Of Our Hit Parade. Aside From Now Being Available Optimised For IPad, The Best New Feature Is A Mode Called Hill Party: A Split-Screen, Knee-To-Knee Local Multiplayer Mode That’s Quite Brilliant (But Only For IPad).

So, Why Would A Simple Side Scrolling Game Be A Good Choice For The Apple TV? It’s Gorgeous – You Can Tell That Every Graphic Has Been Meticulously Created And Playing On A Big Screen Will Showcase That. Apart From The Fact That It’s Simple And Addictive, The Use Of The Multiplayer Mode In A Social Environment Brings A Different Kind Of Challenge That Anyone Can Join In With. Tiny Wings Is Wonderful, Charming, Inventive, Simple, Beautiful, Fun. Pick An Adjective.

Nine Games We Want To Run On The Apple TV: Lost Within

Lost Within Is A Relatively New Game For IOS, Making Its First Appearance On The App Store On 16 April 2015 But Is Already Making A Name For Itself As One Of The Best Horror Games Available For Mobile And Tablet. It’s Set In An Abandoned, Haunted Asylum With Some Very Intense Characters Still Wandering Around Inside. Your Character Is A Police Officer, Tasked With The Job Of Checking The Asylum To Make Sure There’s No One Left Before It’s Destroyed In 24 Hours.

The Game Is Similar To Others In Its Category, With Scavenging And Crafting Health Packs And Other Useful Items Being A Priority (If You Want To Complete The Game Anyway). You Start Off With No Weapon And Can Only Run And Hide From The Insane Characters You’ll Meet, But As The Game Progresses, So Does Your Arsenal. You’ll Also Experience The Occasional Time Warp To Navigate Through Certain Areas, But We’ll Let You Discover That Yourself. The Aim Of The Game? Escape The Asylum Alive.

It’s The Audio That Truly Makes This Game Something Special (And Scary). It’s Recommended That You Wear Headphones As It Uses Stereo Sound So If There’s Something Walking Around In The Room To Your Left, It’ll Be Loud In Your Left Ear, As If You Were There. It Really Adds To The Gameplay And Makes It More Immersive. It’s Great For Environmental Sounds, But When You’re Spotted The Audio Really Comes Into Play, As The Cries Of The Inhabitants Genuinely Scare You And It Was Definitely Enough To Get Our Hearts Racing.

The Lighting And Graphics Are Great, And While The Touchscreen Controls Work Surprisingly Well, We’d Love To See This On TV With MFI Controller Support. Why? Imagine Something Bursting Through A Door On A 42inch TV Instead Of A 9.7inch IPad – Games Like This Are Meant For The Big Screen Where They Can Cause A Big Impact. LOOK BEHIND YOU!

Nine Games We Want To Run On The Apple TV: SketchParty TV

SketchParty TV Is Different To Every Other Game In This Roundup, But Why? It’s A Gamealready Optimised For Apple TV Output, Meaning That You Can Enjoy This Game Using Apple’s AirPlay Technology Today. Whereas Many Games Aren’t Optimised For Apple TV Output And Will Only Mirror What’s Happening On Your IPhone/IPad, SketchParty TV Works In A Different Way.

The Inspiration Behind SketchParty TV Was Pictionary, With Two Teams Competing Against Each Other. One Person Draws, While Another Guesses What’s Being Drawn Within A Two-Minute Time Limit. Each Team Has Five Words To Get Through In Two Minutes, And If You Get Stuck, You Have The Option To Pass And Come Back To It If You Have Time. You Draw The Picture Using Your IPhone Or IPad, And Is Displayed In Real Time On Your TV – It’s A Less Messy, Digital Version Of Pictionary!

So, What’s Different About SketchParty? It’s Not Mirroring Your IPhone Display, But Is Generating A Different Display So That The Words Aren’t Displayed On Screen Along With The Drawing. It’s A Great Idea, And Made Us Feel Like We Were Playing Something More Than A Mobile Game. Not To Mention That You’ll Have A Few Laughs With Friends, Especially If The Person Can’t Draw!

The 5 Best Games of Tokyo Game show 2015

Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Online Blends The Superb Sandbox Stealth Of The Phantom Pain With Smart, Different Competitive Multiplayer. We Played A Lot Of Bounty Hunter Mode And Are Ready For More When MGO Releases In October.

Don’t Forget To Check Out The Cloak And Dagger Gameplay Footage As Well.

Dragon Quest Builders

Square Enix’s Take On Minecraft Is Much More Adorable Than Mojang’s Monolithic Building Game, And Dragon Quest Builders Brings Enough To The Table To Differentiate Itself.

We Have Yet To See It In Depth, But We’ll Know By January How Deep Its Role-Playing Systems, Quests, Story, And Other Definitively Dragon Quest Things Fit Into This Builder.

Bloodborne: The Old Hunters

All Right, It’s Not Technically A Full Game, But The Old Hunters Connected With Us As Deeply As Bloodborne Ever Has. We Fought The New Boss And Battled With The Rad New Weapons In From Software’s First Expansion For Bloodborne. It Has Spooky New Environments And Is Already Delivering On Some Of Bloodborne’s Biggest Mysteries.

We’ve Been Ready For More From This Game For Months, And What’s Coming Already Seems As Rewarding And Punishing As From Software’s Games Get.

Dark Souls 3

Magic Makes A Massive Difference In Dark Souls 3 — It Adds New Abilities And Attack Stances While Giving Players Even More To Manage. It’s A Bit More Demon’s Souls And A Bit More Bloodborne, And Could Be The Best Version Of Dark Souls To Date.

Street Fighter V

Karin And Rashid Fit Right Into Street Fighter V’s Faster, More Brutal Pace. We Wenthands-On With The Two New Characters And Spent Some More Time With The Old Ones.

Capcom’s Flagship Fighting Series Is Doing A Lot Of Things Right Already And We’re Eager For More.

Make Sure To Check Out Our Tokyo Game Show Hub For More Trailers, Impressions, And Other News From Last Week’s Convention.

Dark Souls 3 Gets Direct Gameplay Video from TGS 2015

Dark Souls 3 Has Just Received A Direct Feed Gameplay Video Showcasing The First Actual Sequences From The Upcoming Role-Playing Game Made By From Software And Published By Bandai Namco.

Dark Souls 3 Got Its Full-Fledged Reveal Back At The Beginning Of The Summer, When The Two Companies Behind The Challenging RPG Revealed The First Glimpse Of The Impressive Title.

Dark Souls 3 Gets Direct Gameplay Video from TGS 2015
Dark Souls 3 Gets Direct Gameplay Video from TGS 2015

Since Then, A Few More Details Were Presented At Gamescom 2015, And This Week, As The Tokyo Games Show 2015 Is Kicking Off Officially, From Software And Bandai Namco Made A Few More Announcements, Relating To The Release Date And The Start Of Its Network Stress Test.

Now, AGB Brings Forth Some Direct Gameplay Footage From The Upcoming Role-Playing Game, With A Big Emphasis On The Revised Mechanics That Are Present In The Title.

You Can See Players Wield Various Weapons And Engage Quite A Lot Of Different Enemies, From Regular Soldiers To Beasts And, Of Course, Giant Boss Enemies That Have Devastating Attacks And Huge Health Bars.

The New Mana System, Which Is Based On A Bar Instead Of Charges Like In Previous Titles, Is Also Portrayed, But Don’t Expect That Many Spells.

Dark Souls 3 Is Set To Make Its Debut In Late March In Its Native Japan, While Those In The Rest Of The World Are Going To Have To Wait Until April To Get It On PC, PS4, And Xbox One.
