SEO vs. SEM or both?

So, you’ve decided to take the big plunge and put in more efforts in promoting your website or e-commerce, and then you encountered these big words search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM).
The confusion arises because a lot of tech guys interchange the usage of the two which makes it worse.

Hubspot’s Nicole Rende writes these quick definitions.
“Search engine marketing is a form of Internet marketing that involved the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPS) through optimization and advertising.” SEM includes SEO tactics, as well as several other search marketing tactics.

Microsoft to reportedly unveil Windows 9 ‘Threshold’ on September 30

From the comeback of Start Menu to virtual desktops, the rumour mill has been buzzing with tidbits about Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 successor.

Sources have informed TheVerge that the event will be held on September 30, while a report by ZDnet claims Microsoft is ‘planning to release a preview version of Windows 9 in late September or early October’.

Google to mentor Indian companies

Ravi Gururaj, chairman of the Nasscom Product Council, said the Nasscom 10,000 Startups programme was championed by Google India MD Rajan Anandan and the programme had provided a huge booster shot to India's technology entrepreneurial ecosystem. "Google's Launchpad is a similarly innovative compressed bootcamp which will deliver access to world class experts, and knowledge to further help catalyse the Indian startup ecosystem. Google “Pigeon” Updates Local Search Algorithm

Searchineland reported that Google was reporting a major update to the local ranking algo:
Google has released a new algorithm to provide a more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are tied more closely to traditional web search ranking signals. The changes will be visible within the Google Maps search results and Google Web search results.
The core changes are behind the scenes, but it does impact local search results rankings and some local businesses may notice an increase or decrease in web site referrals, leads and business from the change.
Google told us that the new local search algorithm ties deeper into their web search capabilities, including the hundreds of ranking signals they use in web search along with search features such as Knowledge Graph, spelling correction, synonyms and more.
In addition, Google said that this new algorithm improves their distance and location ranking parameters.
