SEO: Google Improves Crawling for Geotargeted Sites

Ecommerce sites that use geotargeting to serve different content to customers in different countries have faced challenges with organic search. On Wednesday, Google announced its efforts to overcome these challenges, enabling more multinational sites to rank in Google’s search results.
Geotargeting is a widely accepted feature that improves customer experience on a site. Unfortunately, some of the ways in which geotargeting features are implemented can actually act as a barrier to search engines, preventing them from crawling and indexing content not intended for visitors physically located in the United States.
The problem has been that Google looks American. Googlebot — the crawler that Google uses to index the web — crawls from an IP address based in California.
The problem has been that Google looks American. Googlebot — the crawler that Google uses to index the web — crawls from an IP address based in California.
As a result, some sites that employ geotargeting serve only Googlebot content intended for U.S. customers. Content intended for customers in other countries did not get crawled and had no chance of being included in Google’s search results.

SEO Best Practices and Trends for 2015

What SEO Best Practices will be HOT in 2015?
The Internet is a huge factor in how marketing is performed nowadays, and keeping up with the latest SEO trends is important to keeping your marketing edge. This is because traditional push marketing is being replaced by more cost-effective inbound marketing strategies like search engine optimization (SEO), that drives targeted audiences to you as apposed to out bound marketing where you are marketing to the masses and hoping you reach the right people. Make sure to bookmark this page as your SEO best practices checklist and don’t let up! Here are the top 8 SEO trends to watch for in 2015.
1. Content is King. Google’s latest search engine algorithms focuses more and more on content, which means there is less focus on keyword saturation and more focus on whether or not the content is actually relevant to the keywords. You should continue to generate high-quality content that uses appropriate, relevant keywords and synonyms for those keywords, but focus more on the content than the words themselves.
2. Social Signals Will Be Even More Important. Changes within the search engine algorithms have not just placed greater importance on the content, but they’ve also begun to rely more upon social signals to elevate results up the ladder in search ranking importance.

Quickly See AdWords Performance By Search Query Length In Google Analytics

A new Word Count Query dimension in Analytics lets advertisers quickly compare head terms and long-tail queries.

Google Analytics has come out with a handy feature for AdWords users that lets you sort search queries by word count to more quickly analyze traffic from head terms and versus long-tail terms.
The Query Word Count dimension for AdWords search queries aggregates queries by, yes, word count, so you no longer have to do data dumps and Excel formulas to get this view.
The dimension is located in the AdWords Search Queries report under the Acquisition section in Google Analytics.
Clicking on any of the Word Counts on the list will show all of the queries matching that criteria.

Search “Super Bowl” & See The Best Search Results Page Bing Has Ever Had

Bing's search results include original content and almost anything a fan would need to know before the game starts.

That’s what it looks like if you do a search for “super bowl” on Bing. (You can click the image to see a bigger version if it helps. I’ll be commenting on the numbered items above throughout the article below.)
I know, as a longtime SEO consultant, that I’m supposed to hate all of the content on the page and how far down the “10 blue links” have been pushed and how much traffic sports-related websites are probably losing because there’s so much content and so little need to click to another page … but I think this is the single greatest page of search results I’ve ever seen on Bing. Here’s why:

Left-Side Content

The top of the main search results content block starts with basic game info (#1 on the image above) that, by now, we’d all expect on any search engine. Indeed, Google and Yahoo have very similar boxes.
Bing’s answer box goes way beyond Google and Yahoo, though. It’s got a game prediction from the often correct Bing predictions tool that adds some color to the game matchup. (#2 above) Oh, and there’s an affiliate link for “Tickets” that leads to SeatGeek.com. I can do without that, but whatever.

Combining Your PPC & SEO Strategies

Many companies are torn between a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or pay-per-click (PPC) strategy for their business.

SEO

Since early 2012, there have been many questions surrounding the SEO world with Google algorithm updates, such as Penguin, threatening websites and instilling the fear of consequence for utilizing "risky" SEO tactics.
Looking at ranking in the Google organic search results today - everything is centralized around TRUST. You must be ready to show Google your website can be trusted, and that you are staying within their quality guidelines. And you, as a business, have to provide the user with quality products/services that are relevant to their search.
It's also important to recognize that in 2015, SEO services are not cheap. When you choose to hire an SEO company to work on your website, you are hiring knowledge not just a service! To ensure the best SEO strategy for your site, there may be a combination of audits, and optimizations that must be addressed, as well as ensure that the links built are of QUALITY to avoid a penalty by Google.

Google Trash Can Recover Your Deleted Analytics

A new recovery feature for Google Analytics means that users will never again have to worry about deleting data or accounts. Today, Google launched "Trash Can," which allows users to undo deletes in Google Analytics.
Trash Can is a safety net that saves information each time users delete a view, property, or account from Google Analytics. To use Trash Can, Analytics users simply select an account from the Administration tab and click the Trash Can icon. Then a list of deleted information appears, and users simply check off the information they want reclaimed and hit restore to return the document to its previous state.
The only catch is that Trash Can only stores information for 35 days. After that, it gets deleted permanently.

Negative Keywords Geek Out: Proactive and Reactive Approach

In my recent post on SEW, "5 AdWords Optimization Checkpoints You May Be Missing," I mentioned negative keywords as a critical checkpoint since they are not very visible in the AdWords interface. In fact, they are sometimes forgotten about.
Since negative keywords prevent ads from showing on irrelevant keywords, advertisers can save significant click spend and improve overall performance of an account by implementing a plan of attack.
One concern and case for a negative plan is that now, AdWords matches close variant queries with exact match and phrase match keywords, so they can be triggered by misspellings, singular and plural forms, acronyms, stemmings, abbreviations, and accents.
Another good reason to be a big fan of negatives is the "other search terms" row. This data is not detailed out by individual query. It contains keywords not searched enough, those that did not receive clicks in 30 days, and searches in the past 24 hours (may be detailed after 24 in main list). As you can see in the example below, this advertiser paid $490 on "other," or 14 percent of their total spend.

What to Do When Your Organic Landing Page Isn’t the Optimal Page

Ten years ago, maybe even five years ago, traffic was the only metric SEO professionals were responsible for. The industry was new, we were still figuring out what we doing, and candidly our stakeholders didn’t know any better.
The industry is nothing like that now.
We’re better equipped at understanding algorithms, users are savvier with search engines, and stakeholders demand more and better data.
Now, SEOs are just as responsible for the user’s experience when they land on the page as they are on how to get them there in the first place. And that changes everything, especially when it comes to your SERP landing page.
We never used to — OK I won’t lump us all in together: I never used to — think too much about this. We were ranking, our listing was attractive, and we were getting clicks, so my job was done. But the bounce rate is astronomical, the conversion rate sucks, and people are exiting faster than turning off Sharknado.

Big Digital Marketing Resolutions For 2016

According to columnist Alistair Dent, it's too late to plan for this year -- so get a head start on planning for the next.

I know what you’re thinking: This seems a bit premature. A 2016 article at the start of 2015? It’s not a typo, though, and it’s deliberate.
There are copious 2015 planning articles circulating at the moment — but if you’ve not started planning for 2015 yet, then you are probably too late to do anything big. Sorry.
And “big” is what I’m talking about here. What large-scale tasks do you need to complete in order to take advantage of everything that’s coming your way?
For major payoffs in 2016, you need to put extra effort into these areas over the next year:
  • Data Cleanliness
  • Data Sharing
  • Partnerships
  • The Displayification Of Search & Social
  • Closing The Loop
Let’s look at each in turn.

Cleaning Your Data

Clean data sounds simple. It sounds like a hygiene factor that should be assumed. In fact, if you ask the teams that look after your database, I’m sure they’ll tell you the data is already fine. It probably is, for some purposes. But we’re talking about your digital marketing, where requirements can be different.

Quality Content Factors: A List That’s Actually Helpful

We’re all chasing “quality content,” but what does that actually look like? Columnist Nate Dame explores 20 concrete characteristics of great content.

We’re all chasing “quality content” — but what does that actually look like? In an apparent effort to help publishers cope with Google’s intensified focus on “content quality” as a ranking factor, the search giant released a notoriously unhelpful list of questions that publishers should ask themselves when developing content.
Bing was a little more resourceful with their more recent guidelines for quality content. But there are still plenty of holes.
So, here’s my attempt to one-up Google and Bing — a list of twenty concrete, proven characteristics to help content creators hit the formerly-elusive Quality Content mark.

1. Help The User Complete A Specific Task

Create content geared toward a clearly defined keyword + user intent combination, rather than a list of arbitrary keywords. Understanding how to discover user intent, and organizing that data, will enable you to design content that leads the user quickly and efficiently to his/her next step.

2. Organize Thematic Subsections

Google’s fight against keyword stuffing has led to smart algorithm updates that recognize authoritative topical content by identifying keyword synonyms and related terms and phrases.
Help search engines decipher your page by identifying the most important related keywords, and structuring each into its own subsection.

Answer these 5 questions for a stronger SEO strategy

The market is evolving at a fast pace, so having a strong digital presence on the web is crucial for any business today. That's because many people think if you're not on the web, your business isn't trustworthy.
Often, business owners feel overwhelmed when they think about how to get the right traffic to their site. Search engine optimization (SEO) is vital if you want people to find your business online. It will generate leads, set you apart from your competition and, ultimately, improve sales.
Chris Romero, webmaster and SEO expert, shared these insights about SEO and how to drive free organic traffic to a company website: "Most SEO is simple common sense. The more your site is being talked about online from social media posts, forums and press releases, the more traffic you will get. What also helps is how much content your site has that is being shared by others and that readers find truly informative."

11 Tips For Using Slide Presentations For Local SEO Advantage

Looking to go beyond images and videos in your local optimization efforts? Columnist Chris Silver Smith discusses a type of media you may not have considered.

There are many types of media that businesses may use in performing content marketing and local SEO. Some of the more widely known ones include photo images and videos.
However, many local businesses neglect to leverage the power that can come through creating and sharing slideshow presentations on the web.
Similar to other forms of internet content, slideshows can be optimized and shared in order to expand the “buzz” around a business’s name and internet presence. Slideshows can be a vehicle for a few more inlinks and local citations. And, just as with online yellow pages listings, blog posts and articles, slideshows can effectively be a communications vehicle for reaching more potential customers.

Leveraging Your Existing Assets

If you and your sales reps or business development people make presentations to prospects or at conferences, those presentations can gain additional mileage by being shared online, where they can rank for relevant searches, allowing your organization to be found.
While a presentation file rarely provides the full information and entire context of the live presentation you would make when delivering it in person, the slideshow can still convey that you and your company focus upon the topic areas mentioned in the preso, and it can help in augmenting the perception that your company is expert in the information represented in the slides.

Automatic AdWords Currency Conversion Now Enabled In Google Analytics

Advertisers that use a different currency in AdWords and Analytics will now be able to easily compare cost data in Analytics.

Today, Google announced that Google Analytics and AdWords will now be able to speak the same currency language. The change affects advertisers that happen to use a different currency for cost data in AdWords than Analytics.

With currency conversion, advertisers will be able to easily compare cost data from AdWords in Analytics. Google Analytics will automatically convert cost data from AdWords — cost, CPC and ROAS — in the currency that is set in the Analytics account.
Google uses the exchange rate at the midpoint of the date range selected in Analytics.
“For example, if you are viewing a time period from January 5th to 19th, we will use the rate from January 12th to convert your AdWords cost data to the currency of your GA account.”

This Small Business Redesigned Its Website & You Won’t Believe What Horrible SEO Thing Happened Next

Columnist Andrew Shotland took on a client who'd lost rankings as a result of a site redesign. Here's what he did to help them recover.

Redesigning websites while maintaining their SEO is akin to diamond cutting. One wrong move and you could lose all your organic traffic, not to mention your job.
But in these days of Google penalties, thin content warnings, manual spam actions, UGC spam warnings, etc., it’s often tempting to take a site that has been hit hard, toss it in the garbage and start over again.
The challenge is that if you don’t think through the SEO issues, you are more than likely going to speed up your race to the bottom.
If your site has lost a lot of organic rankings and you are about to change it dramatically, you and the rest of your team may want to read this first.
Do you still have any organic traffic? If so, is that traffic of any value?
While your site may not be generating organic leads the way it used to pre-penalty, it still may be bringing in meaningful business. Before you redo the site, you should understand that you are putting that remaining business at risk if you do not take it into account before you start the redesign.

Google Ventures-Backed RetailMeNot Climbs Out Of Its Google Penalty

What changes did RetailMeNot make to recover from the Google Panda algorithm? It is unclear but their rankings did bounce back.

RetailMeNot, a ventured-back Google company that helps users find coupons and discounts at retail stores, was hit hard by Google’s Panda algorithm when they released Panda 4.0 in May 2014. Since then, RetailMeNot has climbed its way out of that Google penalty – Google doesn’t like to call algorithmic updates penalties – and is ranking better than ever according to SearchMetrics data.
It seems that RetailMeNot has seen a steady increase in their Google rankings return soon after the Google Panda 4.1 update touched down in late September 2014. Here is a chart from SearchMetrics that shows how well their rankings are for their main keywords in Google’s search results:

PLAs Drove 56 Percent Of Non-Brand Google AdWords Clicks In Q4 [RKG]

Google product listing ads continue to drive more and more traffic for retailers. In Q4, product listing ads (PLAs) drove 56 percent of non-brand clicks and 30 percent of overall Google search ad clicks, according to RKG‘s latest report, which encompasses primarily large-volume retailers.
Google gave PLAs greater prominence in 2014 by often serving them above organic listings, rather than confining them to the right rail. Retailers also continued to push heavily on the format as the ROI remained favorable compared to non-brand text ads.
Click-through rates on PLAs were 130 percent higher and conversion rates were 30 percent higher than non-brand text ads in Q4. ROI held at 9 percent above non-brand text ads even as the average order value was 12 percent lower.
Click costs on PLAs rose on higher competition during the holiday shopping season. CPC came in 5 percent higher than non-brand text ads.

2 Tales Of Clarity Using Google Analytics’ Multi-Channel Funnel Reporting

Few marketers dispute the wisdom of Carly Fiorina’s quote above – but when it comes to transforming data into valuable insights, the question is often where to look to find this data.
Analytics platforms offer entire worlds of detail for our interpretation, and in one corner of the Google Analytics universe that’s well worth exploring, you’ll find the Multi-Channel Funnel (MCF) reports.
The MCF tab of Google Analytics strictly represents those sessions that have ultimately resulted in a conversion, which means that your insights will solely be based off converted traffic.
Chapters could be authored on the uses of the Assisted Conversions, Time Lag, and Path Length reports, but this article focuses on the application of your Top Conversion Path report, my favorite of the MCF reports.

About The Top Conversion Paths Report

This report is hands down one of my most treasured possessions when it comes to evaluating the multi-channel pathways of your users. The visibility of a converter’s path contributes quantifiable value to your discussions with clients or in-house higher-ups as you highlight the impact of your marketing touch points.
Your Top Conversion Path (TCP) report can include any of the conversion goals being tracked in Google Analytics. An e-commerce business, for example, may be tracking sales as well as micro conversions such as “Find A Location” users and e-mail sign-ups. When it comes to using the Top Conversion Path report, it may be most valuable to segment these reports, looking just at online sales or a specific micro conversion for a period of time.

Google Rumored to Be Planning Wireless Service

Google is reportedly plotting to launch its own mobile network in its continuing bid to control all aspects of your life.
That's according to a report at The Information (paywalled), which claims that Google is looking to piggyback on the T-Mobile and Sprint networks in the U.S.
The tech giant is seeking to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in a similar way to Virgin Media and Tesco Mobile in the U.K.
Google will reportedly sell voice and data plans through an online store, likely to be Google Play, and the plans could come bundled with the company's Nexus smartphones when they eventually launch.
Google wants to enter the mobile business in a bid to force wireless carriers to offer better services or lower prices, according to the report, which cites three people familiar with the matter.
However, analyst Benedict Evans suggested that Google’s ability to turn the wireless industry on its head might be very limited.
"It would be a lot easier for a Google MVNO to make the U.S. market just look like a normal competitive market than to transform it utterly," he said on Twitter.
"The problem with MVNOs is that you're completely dependent on the wholesale deal you get, and the cost base and quality of the host network."
The project, codenamed Nova, is likely to launch this year under the leadership of Google exec Nick Fox, the report claims.

6 Degrees of SEO Separation – From Data to Content Performance

Something significant has been happening in the world of SEO for some years. Most of us are aware of the shift, even if we’re not able to quite put it in words. As the SEO discipline grows, the borders and gaps between other disciplines grow smaller.
In fact, if we were to look at SEO in terms of the "six degrees of separation" (for example, how far away SEO is from another marketing discipline) we’d likely find that it’s very closely tied with each and every marketing and business goal in some way.
In this post, I’ll show you how as marketers, we’re all just six degrees of separation away from a fully integrated SEO marketing program that includes:
  1. Gathering and understanding data
  2. Structuring data
  3. Targeting demand
  4. Optimizing content
  5. Integrating with other channels
  6. Measuring performance
Let’s look at each of these steps in closer detail…

2015 SEO tactics: 3 ways to make Google your BFF

Who doesn't want to be best friends forever (BFFs) with Google? In the world of online marketing this should be at the top of everybody's list.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the forever cat and mouse game. The minute you think you nailed it, the players change and, in fact, the game board you were playing on also changes every time Google changes its algorithms.
According to Forbes.com, "brands will realize it is SEO and content, not one or the other." Experts are saying that in 2015, keyword research and meta tags will continue to be important while content marketing will be key. Some professionals predict that websites lacking in high-quality, unique content will suffer greatly. Here are three strategies:
• Long-tail keyword searches: The term "keyword" is commonly understood by most, however, industry specialists are saying we should be paying attention to using more "long-tail keyword searches" in 2015. A long-tail keyword search gives users the opportunity to find more specific content for what they are searching.

Stop Procrastinating: It’s Time To Address Mobile SEO

Columnist Janet Driscoll Miller explains how to evaluate your mobile performance in organic search so that you can make the case for investing in mobile.

I know, I know. We’ve been hearing it for years now: “This year is the year of mobile!” But for the first time in all of those years, I think we’re truly seeing mobile revolution for marketers.
This past quarter, by their own estimations, Walmart reported that 70 percent of the traffic to their site during Thanksgiving weekend was from mobile devices, and Target reported that 60 percent of their holiday site traffic was from mobile.
But mobile traffic isn’t isolated to just retail e-commerce sites. Whether your organization is B2C, B2B, non-profit or other, there’s a place for your company in mobile.

Should Mobile Be A Priority for Your Site?

My own company’s website has seen a 659 percent increase in mobile organic traffic over just the past year. I honestly never expected it would be that high! What are your mobile traffic levels today?

Why SEO Is Much Easier Than You Think

Search-engine optimization (SEO) has gone through a series of evolutions over the years. Older tactics, which focused on keyword-based optimization and black-hat practices, have become obsolete, and modern strategies, which focus on user experience, have come to replace them. Throughout its history, SEO has been a cost-efficient and incredibly valuable strategy for business owners of all industries.
But despite the strategy’s simplified development, many business owners are still too intimidated by the perceived difficulty of SEO to follow through with it. SEO is a time-intensive strategy, and it does demand significant attention, but it has reached a point where it’s no longer difficult. With the right mentality and a sound commitment, any business owner can start building an SEO campaign -- and reaping the many benefits.

The roots of the misconception

To business owners unfamiliar with the technical side of web development, the idea of Google’s algorithm often seems extraordinarily complex -- truly, the algorithm itself is extraordinarily complex, but that doesn’t mean you need an extraordinarily complex strategy to be successful with it.

Is SEO a Myth?

There is an old man in Woking, Surrey, who carefully places a bowl of custard outside his front door every night before he goes to bed. For years, people were curious about this until a couple of school children knocked on his door and asked “why do you put a bowl of custard outside your door each night?”. He smiled and said: “It is because of the elephants.” The children looked at him rather puzzled and said “But there are no elephants in Woking.” “So,” the old man said, “it must be working then.”
Of course, this is not a true story, but it shows that we often have unshakable belief in something. The old man puts his bowl of custard out, no elephants arrive, therefore the bowl of custard must be warding off the animals. At least that’s his belief.
We can see unshakable beliefs all around us – indeed, we often have them ourselves. You may be a Christian with the unshakable belief that Jesus was the son of God. Or you may be Jewish, regarding Jesus as a kind man, but not the son of God. Alternatively, you may be an Atheist, unmoved by the concept of a deity.

High Gear Insurance invest 6 figures in Online Marketing

We are always happy to see businesses understanding the necessity of a great, functioning website, with investing in online marketing being the only route to modern success.
Highgear.co.uk seem to have taken this to a new level, with the news of them spending a 6 figure sum on their website shocking the industry.
In a previous release from the company the director said ‘we have geared our website up to attract taxi drivers, ensuring all UK cabbies know about the great service we provide’.
With taxi insurance being their main service it appears that they have placed huge focus on getting the site optimising for all relevant searches.
With a great website being a huge advantage to a business what is the point of having it if nobody sees it? It seems that High Gear is making sure their site sells their service to as many people possible,

Should Search Marketers Spend More Time Optimizing for Apps or Mobile Web?

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released a study this week titled "Apps and Mobile Web: Understanding the Two Sides of the Mobile Coin." The research dove into how mobile users are searching for accessing content and what that means for marketers.
According to the study, Internet use on mobile can be divided into two categories: the use of apps and browsing the mobile Web. The increase in the number of apps offered has often overshadowed the importance of the mobile Web, causing some confusion as to which means of access is predominately used.

The Search and Social Connection

According to the study, the most common way mobile Internet users find websites is from search and shared links from applications (predominately social media).
On the flip-side, the majority of respondents share mobile sites they like through word of mouth, email, and social media. But thankfully for search marketers, as you can see in the chart below, the vast majority of users surveyed still use search engines to find what they are looking for.

Local and Mobile Converge in 2015

Forrester recently conducted a study that discusses how companies with multiple locations are applying local search to build their brands. As I read the many findings and recommendations I was struck by one inescapable conclusion: succeeding with local search means succeeding with mobile marketing…mobile success is synonymous with local.
According to the study, "Uncovering the Benefits of Local Search," marketers from national brands are experiencing benefits such as brand awareness and better-quality leads by implementing comprehensive local marketing strategies. Brands have an opportunity to use local to embrace contextual marketing more effectively, but most won’t maximize this opportunity until they realize the interconnected relationship between local and mobile.
Why? Because your customers are already integrating local and mobile. The mobile savviness of your customers is one of two key factors to weigh when prioritizing the urgency of local marketing. According to the Forrester Local Opportunity Matrix, "If your firm has a large local footprint and an aggressively mobile audience, you are a firm they label as a 'Mobile Local.' Local is critical to your effort, and you should make local search a budget priority."

3 Simple Ways to Optimize Your AdWords Remarketing Campaign Now

When Google AdWords remarketing first hit the scene in 2010, many of us wondered how we’d be able to optimize this type of online advertising as we did with the flexibility of search ads.
Sure, remarketing was a great way to continue advertising to people who had already visited our websites, but what could be done beyond just showing them ads over and over as they moved about the Web?
Five years and multiple new features later, we’ve found that there are so many ways advertisers can streamline their remarketing campaigns for improved return on investment (ROI).
And while the possibilities are seemingly endless, there are a few "go-to" areas in your remarketing campaign you can analyze first when you want to boost your ROI. With a few small adjustments and tests, you can garner significant results.

Are Keywords Relevant to SEO in 2015?

The focus on keyword-based search engine optimization is dying quickly, as we’re witnessing the resurgence of long-tail keywords. Keywords once meant everything to a campaign; Google collected data about a site solely based on the keywords that were present on its pages and in its links, and companies could measure their success based on how they ranked for their target keywords. It was a simple, one-to-one relationship that made it easy for almost anybody to start stuffing and ranking.
Fortunately, those black hat practices have mostly died off, but there are still many search marketers who hold keywords in high regard. It’s true that looking at your keyword rankings can still give you some indication of the health of your campaign, but the relationship between keywords and search visibility success has become much more complex, and there are too many other onsite optimization considerations to ignore.
To illustrate the dwindling significance of individual keywords, I’ve put together this analysis of onsite optimization factors that matter far more than keyword presence.

Placement Means More Than Frequency

Keywords aren’t totally dead in the water — after all, Google still needs some kind of text to figure out what it is your company actually does. In that sense, you could say that keywords are simply informational tidbits for Google’s analysis, rather than having a quantifiable relationship and impact on your actual rankings.

Yahoo Sees Big 1.6 Percent Monthly Search Share Gain At Google’s Expense In New comScore Data

Significant monthly bump likely the result of Firefox default search deal.

Measurement firm comScore just released its December search market share report for the US. Last week the firm mistakenly posted the data early and quickly depublished the page.
In the earlier release comScore showed Google losing 0.5 percent points vs November 2014. Beneficiaries of that loss were Yahoo and Bing respectively. Bing gained 0.1 percent share while Yahoo picked up 0.4 points. However these numbers (chart below) were apparently in error and immediately withdrawn.

Google Sending Mobile Usability Warnings To Huge Number Of Webmasters

Google sending notifications to webmasters with sites that are not mobile friendly. Is this a sign of a new mobile algorithm coming soon?

Google is sending mass notifications to webmasters who has websites that are not mobile-friendly. These notifications contain the subject “fix mobile usability issues found on…” It then goes on to explain that these sites have critical mobile usability errors on 100% of the pages on the site and thus the pages will be “displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.”
These notifications are being sent via Google Webmaster Tools and via email. It is also being sent to sites that are simply not mobile friendly at all and typically, the webmasters know their sites are not mobile friendly. What we have here is Google reminding these webmasters their sites are not mobile-friendly and issuing a warning that the pages won’t rank well in mobile search.
There are clear signs that a new mobile ranking algorithm is about to launch at Google. Google told us they are experimenting with it since November. They also launched a mobile friendly testing tool, mobile usability reports in Google Webmaster Tools, and mobile-friendly labels in the search results.

5 SEO Myths to Forget in 2015

2014 was a rough year. We went months without any real updates, and then in the last four months there were Panda, Penguin, Pirate, and Pigeon along with tweaks and refinements along the way. In fact Penguin was never given an end date; it just keeps on rolling like Tina Turner on a river.
So now we are a few weeks into 2015 and the year started off with a bang of bad info and discussions around them. First, Moz let their White Board Friday be taken over by a malcontent with nothing but unfounded negatives about our industry and the good people in it selling his secret undisclosed sauce. Then the U.K. Apprentice gave the £250,000 prize to a guy who is going to sell SEO services seemingly without regard to quality at a price that would make a scam SEO cry.

Google’s Knowledge Graph May Show For 25% Of All Search Queries

Google's Knowledge Graph shows for about 25% of all Google queries, which can pose a threat to the publishers who are the source of much of that data.

Steven Levy has a really in-depth story on Google’s organic search trends over the years. He was able to interview the key players and decision makers on the Google search team and one of the nuggets of information he shared was that he believes that about 25% of all searches done on Google show a knowledge graph related answer or box.
Steven Levy put this in brackets and added a disclaimer that Google wouldn’t say, but there is no way he pulled the 25% number out of a hat. He probably overheard it or got this information off the record.
n his story, Steven talked a lot about the knowledge graph. He even mentioned how important the acquisition of MetaWeb, the company behind Freebase is to the knowledge graph

4 Ways SEO and UX Experts Can Work Together to Improve Web Development

SEO’s reputation has evolved and improved quite a bit in the last several years. Whether you’re an SEO by title, a technical architect, or a Web designer, you know that search engine optimization is a fundamental piece of a healthy website.
While user experience design is viewed as an inherent component of a website, many development teams still approach SEO as an afterthought tacked on at the end of a project. Or worse, they merely ensure a site isn’t doing anything blatantly wrong, toss a few title tags and descriptions on key content pages, and then call it a day. Optimizing a site for search through a holistic approach to SEO is key for a Web development project to reach its full potential.
SEOs will have a better chance at being included in these projects as a forethought rather than an afterthought if we can find the right ways to partner with our UX counterparts and share a list of project objectives.
Here’s how you get started.

Google Opens Its Domain Registration Service Doors

Google has kicked off its domains-for-all program and is letting users take on a domain and make a website.
The search giant is competing with outfits like GoDaddy, but with a purely U.S. focus. The company is offering a domain registration service that has already proved itself during a preview period.
This may all sound a bit 1990s, but bear with Google. It is doing it for the greater good and to encourage growth among small businesses, except perhaps small domain registration businesses.
"A domain name says a lot about who you are and what you do. For businesses especially, picking out the right domain name is often the starting point to building a successful online presence," Google said in a blog post.

"With new domain endings like .recipes and .clothing, there are now more options to choose from than ever before.
"Last year, we [began] to test a new service called Google Domains to help people get online with a domain and a website.

3 Messages Your Rankings Are Sending

Tracking keyword rankings in Google can be one of the most fun and frustrating parts of SEO. When we see movement for those phrases that are the "Big money, big money, no whammies, no whammies, stop" keywords, it’s a good day. But when day after day those words still linger off the first page, it can make you want to chuck it all and go back to an analog world.
But sometimes, we spend so much time looking at ranking reports for what we want to see that we miss the forest for the trees. If we only listen for what we want to hear, we may not pick up on what is actually being said.
Sometimes keyword reports, especially the extended ones from tools like SEM Rush or SpyFu, that give you more than just the phrases you’re looking for have a bigger story to tell. At least they do if you know how to read between the keywords.

Dominant Theme of Relevance

Looking at the kinds of phrases you rank for can be a huge message about how a search engine interprets your most relevant concepts.
