Epic Games Founder Tim Sweeney Is Betting A Lot On Virtual Reality; He Expects To See Between Three And Five Million VR Headsets Sold Next Year, So It’s Plain To See Why It’s Changing A Lot About The Way The Fortnite, Gears Of War, And Unreal Tournament Developer Makes Its Games And Game Development Tools. Sweeney Told IGN, “I Think It’s Going To Be Most Revolutionary Change That’s Happened In The History Of Computing”

“We’re Not Going To Be Bringing The Engine Offline For A Couple Of Years To Revamp It For A New Generation Anytime Soon As We Did In Previous Generations,” Said Sweeney. “You Know, If We Call It Unreal Engine 5 At Some Point, It’s Going To Be Because Critical Mass With New Functionality Became Available, Not Because It Was Taken Off The Market For A Long Period Of Time.”

Unreal Engine, Ideally, Allows Developers To Work Rapidly On Realistic, High-Fidelity Games For VR And Beyond, But As With Most Emerging And Unproven Technologies, Huge Games Aren’t Going To Come Day And Date.

“I Think We Are Years Away From The Point Where You’re Going To Build A Triple-A, Hundred Million Dollar Budget Game For VR,” Sweeney Said. “But Every Year The Market Is Going To More Than Double In Size And The Budgets Will More Than Double, And I Think Everybody’s Going To Be Working Their Hardest To Keep Up With What’s Possible.”
