Avalanche Studios’ Recent Mad Max Game May Have Failed To Capture The Glory Of Fury Road, But The Developer Has One More Game Planned For This Year It Hopes Will Cement Its Reputation As The Leading Purveyors Of Digital Chaos. At New York Comic Con, Square Enix And Avalanche Studios (Not To Be Confused With Disney Infinity Developers Avalanche Software) Let Hoards Of Fans Get Their Hands On Just Cause 3.

Just Cause 3 Continues The Story Of Radical Mercenary Rico Rodriguez As He Returns To His Tropical Homeland To Free It From The Iron Grip Of A Tyrannical Dictator. It Feels A Little Quaint In A Political Landscape Where US-Cuba Relations Are Thawing In A Relatively Peaceful Way, But It’s A Good Enough Excuse For Loads Of Island Mayhem. It’s Like Saints Row Meets Tropico.

The Lengthy Demo I Played Had Me Shooting Rockets At Enemy Targets While Standing On Top Of A Crashing Plane. From There I Was Let Loose Onto The Open World To Make Even Crazier Things Happen. Ridiculous Moments In Gun-Filled Open-World Games Are Inevitable, But Just Cause 3 Smartly Encourages Players To Continue To Money Shots With The Chaos Points System. This System, Returning From 2010’S Just Cause 2, Rewards Players For Making Things Go Boom And Throwing A Wrench Into The Plans Of The Dictatorship. As The First Just CauseGame On Xbox One And PlayStation 4, Those Booms Can Be Even Bigger. Improved Heavy Weapons Like Miniguns Combined With More Destructible Elements Like Bridges And Vegetation Lead To Longer Chain Reactions Of Annihilation. At Their Panel The Developers Described The Rebuilt Physics Engine, With Nearly 5,000 Animations, As Suited For “Action Movie Moments.”

Another Key Piece Of The Just Cause 3 Puzzle Is The Traversal System. Rico’s Versatile Grappling Hook, Which Lets Him Zip To Virtually Anything Or Anyone In Range, Puts Spider-Man And Bionic Commando To Shame. In Other Open-World Games The Slow, On-Foot Travel Is Typically The Most Tedious Part Of The Experience. But InJust Cause 3, Grappling Onto Railings, Rock Formations, And Moving Cars Is A Joy. New In This Installment Is The “Reeled Hang” Where Rico Can Zip Onto A Helicopter, Stand Underneath It Upside Down, And Kick The Pilot Out To Commandeer The Aircraft.

The Grappling Hook Is Also A Splendid Combat Tool. After Storming A Government Outpost I Would Shoot My Zipline Into Solider After Soldier To Quickly Incapacitate Crowds. I Could Also Shoot Multiple Tethers To Slam Enemies And Objects (Including Animals) Against Each Other. And If The Action Ever Became Too Much To Handle, I Would Just Zipline Away And Use My Parachute Or New Wingsuit To Stylishly Travel To Safety.

I Only Got A Taste Of The Next-Generation Chaos Rico Can Create, Carrying Out His Just Cause, Just Cuz. Just Cause 3 Drops December 1.
